Fitrah Farm Stay: From Soul to Soil - Pescadero, California
Chefs, gardeners, naturalists, and poets gathered to care for our group of 45 souls and share their gifts. We dropped our phones in the lockbox for the weekend. We prayed Jumuah as the Prophet, peace be upon him, did so many times—outside, with his companions at his side. We slept in tents near trees that swayed in dhikr as the sounds of Pacific waves crashed loudly nearby. Many slept outside for the first time in their lives. For others, it was their fifth night outdoors that month. And everyone seemed in their element. We chopped up veggies for each meal from the nearby garden as rays of California sunshine flooded our outdoor chopping stations. We swang on swings overlooking the ocean. We learned how to build a sun dial, and even gauge the pace and type of an animal scurrying through a dirt path by simply observing her tracks. We praised the Prophet through evening Qasidas around cups of strong tea and delicious cake. We tended the garden, touched the soil, and returned our souls to their natural environs of choice—fitrah.
